Godaddy
Godaddy is the big daddy of web hosting but we are really turned off by their complicated control panel and busy site and the fact that they are always trying to sell us something we don't want. Their service could be better if it was more simple. Also their low cost plans didn't allow us to run some of the php billing scripts that we wanted to run. So we recommend them but only for very basic web sites with low traffic and for people who don't mind spending hours on hold for their tech support.

HostBandit
HostBandit is one of the best because they are so simple and their service is not dumbed down in anyway. It's full speed Unix web hosting for just $1/month. HostBandit $1 web hosting control panel is super simple and fast because it's written in C++ so its about 10 times faster than cPanel. Everything is great and we recommend HostBandit.

HostGator
HostGator is our 2nd favorite but they have shut down our site on several occasions when it got too busy and our site was just a Wordpress site with a lot of posts. We didn't like getting the email that they had to shut down our site and having to contact them to get them to turn it back on. So we only recommend HostGator for basic sites that aren't very busy and don't have a lot of content unless you are ok paying for a higher priced hosting plan.

1&1
We don't recommend 1&1 so far.

DreamHost
DreamHost is pretty good but they have high priced plans and you have to pay yearly. Their signup process and control panel seem overly complicated so we recommend them but they are not our favorite.
